Something you should know about me is that I thought I was going to marry Zac Hanson when I was in the fourth grade.

You know…the drummer from that band, the three brothers with long hair that sang Mmmbop? Yeah, that’s right. I had some pretty realistic expectations for myself back in the day. From kindergarten up till third or fourth grade I wanted to be a singer (except for a short time in first grade when I was going to be a marine biologist. Perhaps this was the more realistic one…)

Back to Hanson: I had so many posters plastered to my walls that friends of mine would tell you I had Hanson wallpaper. They were my first concert, and I would have sworn to you that in the midst of thousands of screaming fangirls, Taylor Hanson looked me in the eye when he was shooting the audience with water from the super soakers they had onstage. Oh, I had it bad.

I don’t remember when I decided that Zac and I were perfect for each other. I also don’t remember when I decided we weren’t.

When I was younger, I was never afraid to want things. My childhood ambitions led me to attempt many a challenge, some of which were successful, but most that just turned into an afternoon well-spent. I ate when I was hungry, did (most) things my parents told me to, and made the most of every minute I had. I wrote plays and poetry, made up dances to the Backstreet Boys, covered every part of our driveway with chalk portraits, and played with my friends whenever I had the chance. I never worried about what would happen if things just didn’t work out.

I’m a lot older now. I’ve heard that wisdom comes with age, but really, I think I had it down better when I was in fourth grade. I didn’t waste as much time and I wasn’t afraid to go after what I wanted.
